Wall Sconce FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions: Wall Sconce Garrett

Where in my home is the best place for wall sconces?

Wall sconces can be used in a variety of rooms in the home and are most commonly found in hallways, dining and living rooms as well as master bedrooms. Wall sconces create accent lighting and add an artistic look to the home.

How do I install wall sconces?

Because there typically aren’t ready fixtures on the walls of homes, installing wall sconces will take some time and DIY gusto, or the help of a professional. Here are the steps required to install a wall sconce:

  1. Pick a location; ideally choose a location with an existing light switch so the new wall sconce switch can be installed on the same stud bay as the already existing electrical outlet.
  2. Use a drywall saw to make cuts for the electrical box of the wall sconce and the light switch.
  3. Drill holes into the top stud inside the wall for each sconce, light switch and electrical outlets (if necessary).
  4. Install the wiring by starting with the sconce furthest from the electrical switch. Run 12x2 electrical wire from sconce to sconce until reaching the light switch as well as from the electrical switch to the electrical box.
  5. Wall sconces come with a cut-in box which will now be inserted into the wall and tightened into place with a screwdriver.
  6. Mount the sconces to their cut-in box and connect the wires.
  7. Next install the light switch for the sconces. Attach wires to their appropriate screw counterpart:
    • Copper screw is hot – black wire
    • Silver screw is neutral – white wire
    • Grew screw is ground – both exposed copper wires attach
  8. Test!

Most wall sconces will come with instruction specific to the model purchased, be sure to reference the product specific instructions for a successful installation.

How high do I install wall sconces?

There are different rules of thumb of where to hang a wall sconce. One rule is 72 inches from the floor, another is to hang the sconce just above the halfway point on the wall. The height of the ceiling will be a clear determiner of the most appropriate location for wall sconce installation as well as the location of the stud bay for easy and quality installation.
