Recessed ceiling lights are a low profile way to add ambient or task lighting to a room. Available in both low and line voltage, recessed lighting is the perfect way to achieve your lighting goals while not taking anything away from a centerpiece chandelier or pendant and not taking up floor space with a lamp.
Recessed lighting is typically available in either low voltage (12 volts) or regular voltage (120 Volts). An advantage to low voltage lighting is that because it uses less energy you will save money on electricity.
It is no easier or harder to install line or low voltage over the other, but low voltage will require a transformer to take the electric current running in your home down from 120 volts to 12 volts.

It is definitely easier to install recessed ceiling cans into the ceiling of a house that is being built because you will then have access to the top of the ceiling for wiring, however it is possible to install recessed ceiling cans into an existing home as an addition.
A recessed lighting trim will not only provide an aesthetically pleasing home for the ceiling light but also adds light with reflective materials and some are available with shades that allow the light to be point in a specific direction to provide task lighting or to light something like a piece of art. Also, there is decorative recessed lighting trim available which is very nice to add in the home.
