Outdoor wall scones are perfect for general illumination around entry ways, backdoors, garages doors and other areas where it is helpful to have extra light during the night for finding keys and more. Outdoor wall sconces have an added benefit of high lighting architectural features of a home for aesthetic appeal.
Most outdoor lighting comes as either 12-volt or 120-volt, with the selection of sconces specifically leaning more towards the 120 volt option. For clarification, most homes run on a 120 volt system, so 12 volt outdoor lighting will require a transformation. The main differences between a 12-volt and 120-volt outdoor sconce is that the 120 volt has the capability to be much brighter, while the 12 volt is safer to install. Either voltage is suited for outdoor wall sconces but most people lean towards the 120 volt because wall sconces are often used for entry way lighting which is meant to be a bit brighter than landscape accent lighting. If opting for a 12-volt be sure to purchase the appropriate transformer as well.
Outdoor wall sconces are labeled as being able to withstand installation in dry, damp or wet locations. Dry locations pretty much speak for themselves, but the difference between damp and wet may be a more grey area. Sconces approved for damp locations can withstand high humidity, condensation and light moisture (such as from fog). Sconces approved for wet location can handle snow and rain and have been subjected to appropriate testing.
A variety of bulbs are used for outdoor wall sconces, including but not limited to fluorescent, xenon, halogen and incandescent. Wall sconce product descriptions will clarify which bulb is best for that particular sconce. Bulbs such as fluorescent, halogen or xenon are often times more energy efficient than incandescent and last longer, so light bulb type is important to consider when shopping.
